Extend Now - Move Later… more than ever THE right way to go ……..for many….. many reasons!

Updated: Jun 10, 2023

The ups and downs of mortgage interest rates and house prices continues. This very much tends to still suggest there is continuing advantage in ‘staying put’ if you can. But, if the pressure is on for more space at home, if you do stay, then surely the right home extension or renovation project STILL offers a very feasible option for the rest of this challenging year ahead ……and indeed even on into 2024 too!

We, at Mint would suggest that even now as the Summer ticks on - our ‘Extend Now - Move Later’ initiative and message is, it seems, now proving itself to be more longer lasting than might have been predicted at this time last year.

later year outlook

Something of an update for you then to consider below…..namely some intriguing views and information, which we found online as we were ourselves assessing expected levels of potential project works for the rest of the current year and indeed on to Spring 2024.

situation pointers

We found what we felt were some of the more immediate key, supposedly most significant, situation ‘pointers’ that prompted attitudes and opinions in support of our now very well-established ‘Extend Now-Move Later’ message. It seems this message still, for sure, has a good deal of relevant time to run, we think….and - whisper it quietly - we see this message as easily holding its relevance and advantage - until certainly next Spring.

information selection

Herewith below then, a selection of information ‘news pointers’ very much to the fore right now, all of which seem set to very much effect how things could pan out for the year ahead. Read on …and consider how challenging YOU think a home move may be now, or indeed, in the near future …..

1. House prices in biggest fall for nearly 14 years with worse to come ….with homeowners facing perhaps major price drops of over £100,000….the whole price outlook looks very volatile with worse to come perhaps. No joke indeEd for all homeowners trying to sell and move house, it would seem.

2. The cost-of-living crisis combined with increasing interest rates means first time buyers are very much still struggling in the face of the desperate looking current housing outlook?

3. UK mortgage holders are facing fierce further increases to their bills…that’s the latest news on the mortgage front, due to rising interest rates. Deals galore are being pulled. It could get worse, as more rises in interest rates become likely …. that’s how experts see things at the moment….

4. Remember hundreds of thousands of mortgage holders are paying thousands more than they were … a fairly short time ago. Surely, this suggests that to take on a home move -really is challenging in the extreme for many right now, A home project would add value to a home and perhaps ‘cushion’ the situation ready for a ‘later-on’ home-move at a later date.

5. What will happen to interest rates as Summer ticks on …there has - don’t you know…. up to now - been 12 successive Bank of England rate rises. So, are more on the way perhaps? Who knows ..who indeed …and the very question suggests clear uncertainty (Surely it does?)….Its a fact any kind of home move is without doubt challenging right now.

6. The outlook is - to an extent it seems - that more people are surely realistically investigating a home project instead of a move…or doing nothing at all for now! Many are surely opting to wait for the continuing financial conundrums of insecurity to clear even a little - and you can’t blame anyone for that!

7. Any amount of modest research online suggests further uncertainty in every quarter … and there are hugely varying views of all kinds on the outlook ….whether to move for now… or wait. (Also, somewhere, an expert suggested there WILL in fairly short time be a 5.5 per cent interest rate …. enough surely to prompt further shudders of uncertainty in many quarters.

for the sake of it…?

So, there we are - nothing is definitive, of course - but, we think, you surely wouldn’t want to move home for the sake of it now - surely you don’t! And, if more space is your essential need, there is surely the home project route to at least consider to an extent (pardon the pun) when it comes to trying to improve life at your place? .

‘raging’ uncertainties

What does seem a real truth, is that we all DO need further time to assess the raging financial and other uncertainties out there. In the main - the many more ‘clever’ homeowners surely WILL ‘hold fire’ for better times ahead reference chasing up a new home..a new mortgage…coping with the new interest rates .. and all those new uncertainties surrounding us right now…. and good luck from us, indeed, if you are on the move right now…

smoke and mirrors

Of course - nothing ever IS a certainty - but, in these ever changing ‘smoke and mirrors’ financial times - any kind of possible alternative to a home move for now is surely worth looking into …. No? Yes? Maybe later…Who knows?….well, that’s how unsure it all is, so it seems?
