Home renovation projects are on the up and up ... but what is most in demand?

Updated: Jun 10, 2023

News is that as Covid regulations seem to be easing, the demand for all types and styles of Home renovation projects remain very much on the rise right now - so reports the always informed, HomeOwners Alliance.

Mint ‘busy busy

We at Mint, of course, handle every type of home extension and renovation around Cheltenham and the Cotswolds, and we have continued to be ‘busy busy’ during the current year, as indeed we were throughout 2020. We, of course, are very much looking ahead now into the Winter and New Year of 2022 for more potential, challenging home renovation and extension opportunities.

most popular

The HomeOwners Alliance have been busy online taking a look at the most popular project-type choices so far this year, via available planning data.

Home cinemas apparently  topped the home renovation trends in 2020, according to some research by Checkatrade. Also, we hear that data specialists, Barbour ABI, the construction industry analysts, have found planning applications for ALL kinds of renovations were more than 20% higher in the second half of 2020 than in the same period in 2019.

continuing trend

Now Government data reports - says the HOA - that this trend has continued into the current year, with planning applications up 20% year on year in the first quarter. For sure, says the HOA  this is hardly a surprise. After all, we have all spent more time at home and have been forced to spend less on travel and going out. Thus, home renovations have looked like a good spending alternative. The HOA have the detail of the types of home renovation which are most in demand right now…..

most popular

Top projects are home extensions. They continue to be the most popular, accounting for 81.7% of planning applications. Reports the HOA “Extending your home, whether by rear extension, side extension or double storey extension is the obvious route to creating space and adding value. There are many types of home extension ideas, from creating open plan living to adding more rooms, especially with the need now for home working space.”

key ideas

You can check out the HOA home extension ‘starter guide’ here Home Extension: Where do I start?  We at Mint are always, of course, ready to offer initial planning guidance and key ideas for how and what kind of home extension might be best for you at your home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds.

garages

The biggest rise in the planning figures, says the HOA, was the rise in applications for garage improvement projects. We at Mint are not surprised!  After all, our homes in many cases have become our place of work. Also, a garage conversion can add up to 20% more value to your home…always good news! The HOA Garage Conversion guide tells you everything you need to know, from project costs to all those testing  planning permission 'ins and outs'.

loft conversions

When it comes to adding value to your home, a loft conversion also adds up to an impressive 20% of value of your home.

For sure, we at Mint completely agree that a loft conversion can be a great way of adding more room, without building into your valuable garden space.

usage options

In London and the South East, according to the research by Barbour API, loft extensions represented a fifth of all applications. Of course, loft conversions offer many usage options too - creating office space, extra bedrooms or more storage space. HOA have the lowdown for you here …..Where To Start With a Loft Conversion.

basement extension

Basement extensions - reports the HOA -  aren’t as popular as certain home renovation trends, but they can still offer an option for creating more space in the home. You might already have an existing cellar to utilise, if not, you may have to excavate and that can be expensive - up to £2,000 per square metre. The  HOA Guide to Basement Extensions. has all the lowdown for you and we at Mint can offer guidance as needed too.

garden buildings

Statistics of late show a significant jump in applications for garden buildings and their related works. This, of course, makes sense, reports the HOA, as during the pandemic there was a constant desire to get out of the house – even if it was just to the end of the garden!

Also, remember, if you stay within certain size parameters, you won’t need to get planning permission to create an office in the garden. The HOA has all the garden room key advice you need to know on this link here….How to Create a Garden Room.

other projects

Many of us continue to spend what would have been their holiday budget on home improvements.

The HOA points out that less intrusive home-update projects, such as kitchen extensions and bathroom renovations also continue to stay popular and these too are all very viable ways, not only to create more space, but also to add value to your home.
