More advice for a more spacious feel and effect in your home or new extension....

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

Recently here on this blog we highlighted some expert advice and guidance on how to make the best of the space you have at home. Space and the pressing need for more of it has, of course, been very much to the fore in these Covid times and when it comes to creating the best illusion of space in any room, it seems the Real Homes experts are full of ideas.

Advice tips and tricks on our first blog in this mini-series covered the size of the furniture you choose for your room and how to position it to create a feeling of more space by ensuring parts of the floor are always on view. First up on part two of this blog post is all about picking the right paint colour scheme for your room.

smart choices

Explains expert, Kathy Kuo, “To start, make smart choices with colour - use white walls/trim / ceiling to make your room seem more spacious. I love the idea of using cool and warm tones of the same hue in one room. For example, having a room with a lower third wainscot in warm grey, and the upper 2/3 in cool grey, punctuated by chair railing or architectural trim detailing in warm whites can be so sophisticated and elevated.'

the right colour

Of course – the Real Homes team point out - the 'right' living room color scheme will of course depend on your tastes, but if you want a small living room to feel bigger, the most straightforward way to achieve that is to pick a light, bright palette. Keep the walls and ceiling a clean, crisp white and bring in just enough contrast with darker neutral hues like greys and blues to give the room some depth in terms of its image and look The Real Homes experts also feel the effect is good too if you could go down the route of painting your walls and ceilings a really dark, dramatic hue.

Says Patrick O'Donnell of Farrow and Ball “While using some dark colours can’t inherently make your room feel bigger, you can help the illusion of more space by painting all the surfaces in one colour, so your eye isn’t drawn towards too many contrasts, such as where the wall stops and the ceiling begins. This detail can work effectively both for dark and light shades, although the former is for those of braver hearts!” A further final item of advice is well known, of course, and that is to be sure to always order paint swatches and test the paint colours out in your space first before you fully commit to your paint choices..... and good advice that is for sure!

trust mirrors

Following on from the paint colour choice – a further tip for this post is all about Mirrors - something you may well know a little about! You can, say the Real Homes experts, very much 'trust in the power of mirrors' Experts design 101, know about the 'power' of Mirrors. They point out that you can pretty much hang a mirror anywhere and watch your room 'grow' but, if you are strategic about it you can really maximize the effect.

natural light

They add “Hanging a mirror opposite a window will really enhance the natural light in the room, making it feel bigger and lighter. So, if your living room could do with a light boost, try that out. You could also prop a large, leaning mirror up in a corner and it instantly gives the impression you have more floor space, especially if you pick one with a very minimalist frame”

room 'growing'
