More views on the 'move or improve' debate this Covid 'Lockdown' Spring! What do you think when...

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

Still more stats and expert opinion caught our Editor's eye online again this week reference the 'move or improve' issue very much to the fore this 2021 'Lockdown' Spring reference highlighting home extension and renovation advantages.

These latest statistics and thoughts were offered by the excellent team( offer the following view :- “If 'Lockdown' has taught us one thing this year it's that if you stay in your home for long enough, you either want to move or make it not look like your home any more” - a telling thought wouldn't you say?

They report further that according to new research from an operation named Attic Self Storage, this trend is set to continue going forward as 53% of Brits say they would rather improve, than move in 2021. Also, apparently, only one in five Brits are currently claiming they would go for the 'move home' option in order to cash on getting stamp duty holiday relief from the Government. Our team view might be that this doesn't seem much of a reward for suffering testing moving home upheaval in these very difficult pandemic times.

sprucing up

The Property Reporter team highlight that 'Lockdown' home-owners in the country are set to spend an average of £6,531 per household over the next year sprucing up, transforming and improving the atmosphere and 'liveability' of their homes.

For your information decorating is the top home improvement activity (69%). In case you are interested, grey is named as the 'top' colour of choice, followed by cream, blue, white and green. Pink is the least desired colour for home decorating....well..whatever... now you know!

Gardens are also in view for a good few of the country's home environment 'improvers' presumably casting forward to the fact that Spring is just a few weeks away and at least that won't change – 'Lockdown', Virus, Vaccine.... or not!

extend or build

Also, reference outside space at home etc.. the Property Reporter indicates that around a fifth of home-owners (18% actually) are looking to extend or build an outhouse within their garden. Also 14% have an eye on a garden office or work hub-type building – a priority for sure for working at home or home schooling etc. etc..

top challenge

The Property Reporter indicate also that it is no surprise in these 'Lockdown' downtimes 'space' remains (of course) something of a 'top challenge for both movers and improvers. The more one stays in one's home – and of course we all have been doing that for many months now - the more we become aware of the challenges of the irritating, badly planned, even unusable, space many of us put up with within our homes.

Space is the key reason for action, of course, and stats show - say that Property Reporter team - that one in three is planning on creating more space by re-working a room (33%), and more than one in five (22%) are looking to create more storage space. Also emerging apparently is that safety - reference the virus pandemic - is the biggest issue stopping Brits buying a home and moving on opting instead for that home improvement renovation or extension.

bad time

Looking at the property market stats-wise, as reported, 61% of Brits believe it’s a bad time to sell a property and 43% say they would rather stay put for safety reasons!! Some 35% said for many it is just too challenging to view properties right now with all the Covid uncertainties and restrictions .

too confusing

Moreover, 18% are put off by banks not lending like before. Also, some 29% think the market is too confusing, and 16% think they might lose too much money on their current property – very much a consideration of course!

For sure the right extension and renovation can ensure you not only get more much needed 'liveability' space now, but, with the right planning and guidance you can add also value and collect more money than you would have done when you sell-up later when the pandemic panic has eased.
