That new TV home extensions programme - what do you think? Our thoughts here …..

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

The team here at Mint Builders were quite enthusiastic when news came through - as reported here not so long ago  - that Channel 4TV - the home of various quite legendary ground breaking property programmes… Location Location ..Grand Designs …. to name but two … were focusing this Autumn on home extensions ….our specialism here at Mint of course …..

But, in some ways this well promoted and anticipated programme has, from our side, after its first few programmes, been a bit ‘off track’. It has been more than a  little bit ‘on the fringe’ in terms of the extensions that have been featured. The projects selected initially were far from achieving general audience interest… it seemed to us…

For sure there were large dollops of extension build ‘razzmatazz’ on view, which had the potential of audience impact. But, delivery was somewhat over-glitzy and over-designed, in an untouchable, ‘out to lunch’ sort of way.

edgy interest

Of course, as a new TV series, the chosen projects selected needed to deliver edgy interest and excitement to attract the widest possible general audience. But, it seemed that the first few projects lost that more general audience interest due to their  ‘over glitzy’ status - a key example being the multi-million pound, underground-type extension in THE most extravagant part of London.

Property ‘porn’ was a view in the Mint camp! There was an outlandish feel about the programme opting one to perhaps remark  …. ‘really … what’s all that about?’ …..How does that appeal to the more general regular homeowner etc etc

oohs and aahs

The  designer interest presenter doesn’t seem in step with audience appeal much either! He seems to be rather posing and self-promoting, chit chatting in his huge 4x4 all about aspects of the projects that the more general audience might find hard to relate to due to his over encouraging ‘oohs and aahs’ at the extravagance and design effect of certain of the most excessive aspects of the extension structures.

more interest

Having said all that, this week… lo and behold!!… on show were two projects that were - shall we say -  of more realistic interest and one indeed verty much totally of interest to us all at Mint.

challenging build

The extension project was on the Cotswolds - just outside Cheltenham at Dowdeswell. It was a challenging build of a clever extension to turn three traditional labourers’ Cotswolds cottages into a fab, usable, realistic family home  …and nicely done it was too!

realistic appeal

What’s more, nicely done also - on the same programme last week - was an extension project in suburban Essex - neat, of clever design and delivering practicality, backed by a style that would find true interest and realistic appeal for sure for many homeowners anywhere in both a productive and inspiring way.

Now that was more like it 👍👍 Interesting to see what happens next perhaps?
