Updated: Jun 11, 2023

We at Mint probably plan and develop as many kitchen extensions and renovations as any other extension or renovation activity. It’s fair to say, we think, that there’s a certain ‘island magic' in the air for many - even most - when it comes to all and every kind of more extensive kitchen project.

At the heart of the new plan in many instances - space permitting - is that oh-so-favourite 'must have' kitchen ‘island’ - the No1 requirement, if at all possible, for most when it comes to the trending look and style to their planned new kitchen.

focused ‘chit chat’

So, in the face of all this, our Editor’s eye was very much caught with some focused online chit chat from the excellent Real Homes team, who were offering loads and loads of kitchen island designs and ideas - and some were certainly very much food for thought for our team.

There was an impressive online offering of some 40 different island ideas ... and attractively considered, ingenious and expertly conceived they were...that’s for sure. We at Mint are ‘hot on new ideas, because we know that, project by project, a bit of originality of response to style, use and space - and cost too - can of course be both invaluable and reputation building.

So check here .... and you’ll see just what we mean. There’s some eye-catching images too and the approach and ideas will certainly get your brain whirring in terms of your up and coming kitchen extension or renovation.

Experts Linda Clayton and Jenny McFarlane are the kitchen island 'gurus' offering their very well considered and excellent kitchen island ideas with all sorts of options - seating, storage and much more. They point out... “Stylish and with heaps of added storage, seating and surface space, whatever the style of your kitchen, kitchen island units offer a multi-functional most effective way of using your space”.

compact space

What's more, the experts at Magnet Kitchens explain, 'Whether you're a baking buff or a culinary connoisseur, storage is an essential element of your kitchen plan - especially if you're working with a more compact space.' They add, 'Whether you'd like a little place to perch with your morning coffee or a larger space to host and dine, an island is both a practical and stylish solution. For sure, if you have modern kitchen or a period-style space, there are it seems plenty of beautiful ideas from the Real Homes experts to get those creative juices flowing....nice!

Suggest Real Homes – quite rightly - the best kitchen islands are carefully positioned to aid easy travel around the kitchen. The suggestion is you could aim for at least a 90cm to 110cm wide walkway in high traffic areas around the fridge and sink. They point out also to remember to allow space for dishwasher doors and extending drawers. Incorporating a sink and/or hob helps to centralize food preparation – appreciated by the avid chef of course. Also, be unashamedly bold with your kitchen island lighting to ensure it takes centre-stage.

rustic look

There are also a range of styles and uses to consider when it comes to the kitchen island. For example you can use it to create a rustic look. Also, if your kitchen cabinets have to prioritise function over style, let your island be the focal point to bring 'personality' to your kitchen space.

The Real Homes experts admit they love the rustic look of a kitchen island and are confident how well it works. Key aspects of the look are mismatched chairs, which bring in an eclectic rustic look. The plan might be to consider a marble top giving an edge of luxury too as a nice contrast. Check here -

floating island

Also, worth considering is a 'floating island'. This kitchen island is say the experts 'striking' Check here - and you can appreciate the effect. It looks like it's floating, but it's actually standing on a pedestal that's much smaller and sits underneath the island. It stops the island feeling too heavy and blocking light in the narrow space of the kitchen.
